Helping Hands Treatment Foster Care
We are a small treatment foster home program that grew out of years of personal experience with adoption and foster care of extremely challenging children. We augmented our experiential expertise with carefully selected professional partnerships to provide a program that is sensitively tailored to the needs of our cared-for children and treatment foster families.
Our head office is our family home just outside of Minden, Ontario. We support treatment foster homes in South Central Ontario, including the counties of Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Durham and Peterborough. We provide care for children supervised by Children’s Aid societies and Family Services in the Province of Ontario and beyond.
It is our belief that all children deserve a safe and caring environment for learning, growing and healing.
Children We Serve
We accept referrals for children of either gender between the ages of 3 – 17. We have experience with children and youth with FAS, FAE, ADHD, Conduct Disorder, O.D.D., Development Delay, and Learning Disabilities. We believe that Attachment Disorder is an underlying element for most children in care and have developed particular expertise in integrating attachment work into our treatment methodology.
Many of our treatment foster homes are in small rural communities where there is limited racial diversity. Foster families who are not of the same cultural background as the foster child will make every attempt to incorporate something of the foster child’s traditions into their lives. Traditional meals, celebrations or religious practices could be shared experiences. Depending on the age and needs of the child, finding community classes, in for example dance, language, crafts, music may be possible.
Many specialized medical services, such as those medically fragile children would require, are not locally available.
We do, however, have access to a wide variety of community services and activities that support social integration and healthy life styles.
We are also a member of the Ontario Association of Residence Treating Youth.
